Easy, immersive reads that pulled me out of a reading slump
In no particular order, these are some of the books I found easy to sink into, hard to put down, and perfect for getting out of a reading slump.
I’m not looking for anything too serious here. I love books that pull me in quickly, keep me turning pages, make me feel something, and remind me why reading is fun.
Some of these made me feel like a giddy teenager again. Some completely transported me into another world. And one or two left me thinking about them long after I finished.
These are the books I keep recommending.
This book had me turning pages so quickly.
Call me naive, but I genuinely did not see the ending coming.
And when I finished it, I was left completely haunted by it.
It was one of those books where I immediately wanted to go back and think through everything I had just read because suddenly so many little details felt different.
If you like fast reads with mystery, tension, and a twist that sticks with you, this is such a good one.
Lynn Painter’s books are always such feel-good reads for me.
They make me feel like a giddy 16-year-old girl again in the best possible way.
Better Than the Movies is cute, romantic, nostalgic, and just so easy to fly through.
I found myself smiling through so many scenes, and that’s honestly one of the things I love most about Lynn Painter’s books.
They’re comforting.
They’re fun.
And they make reading feel easy.
This one is really more of a general Lynn Painter appreciation moment because I keep coming back to her books.
Whenever I’m in a reading slump or just want something light and easy, she is one of the authors I know I can reach for.
Her books have that fun, young, romantic energy that somehow makes me feel like I’m back in high school again.
They’re sweet, funny, easy to read, and always leave me feeling happy.
If you want a book that doesn’t feel like work, Lynn Painter is usually a safe bet for me.
This is one of my favorite YA fantasy series.
Stephanie Garber has this way of writing that makes me feel like I’ve stepped directly into a movie.
Everything feels magical, dramatic, whimsical, and a little mysterious.
These books give me all the feels and completely transport me somewhere else.
That is honestly one of the biggest things I look for in fantasy.
I want to forget where I am for a while.
Once Upon a Broken Heart does exactly that.
Stephanie Garber is one of my favorite fantasy authors because her books make reading feel magical again.
Again, Stephanie Garber is one of my favorites.
Caraval was one of those series I completely fell in love with when I read it.
The atmosphere, the mystery, the magic, the games, the romance — it all just worked for me.
Her books feel dreamy and theatrical, almost like you are watching a fantasy movie unfold in your head while you read.
If you love immersive fantasy that feels whimsical, mysterious, and magical, this is such a fun series to get lost in.
This is definitely my more mature pick.
Daggermouth completely pulled me in and left me so enthralled by the story.
I finished it wanting more immediately, and I cannot wait for the sequel.
This one definitely has mature content, so I would recommend checking the content warnings first if that matters to you.
But if you’re looking for something a little darker, sexier, and more intense than the other books on this list, this is the one.
It was just too good.
What I Look for in a “Reading Slump” Book
I’ve realized that when I’m struggling to get into reading, I don’t need something complicated.
I need something that pulls me in quickly.
I want:
characters I care about
a story that moves
romance or emotion
a little escapism
something that makes me want to keep reading “just one more chapter”
That is really the common thread between all of these books.
They may be completely different genres, but every one of them made reading feel fun and easy again.
And honestly, sometimes that is exactly what I need.
